On 10 May 2018, on the 95th birthday anniversary of the national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev,a massive tree-planting ceremony took place in Gala-Turkan highway area of Baku with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev, First Vice President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva and IDEA founder Leyla Aliyeva.
Upon starting the tree-planting, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev gave detailed information to the President Ilham Aliyev about the recently implemented greening projects.
During the years 2008 to 2018, by the decree of the President, 5 million and 436 different types of trees and shrubs were planted on the 4,443 hectar area along the country’s main highways. The planted trees are maintained by a drip irrigation system. Among the most preferred trees are olive, almond, pomegranate, jujube, pistachio, walnut and hazelnut.
At the event commemorating the 95th birthday anniversary of the national leader, President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and family members panted trees together with young volunteers. As a result of the yearly tradition, this time around 7 thousand trees were planted in the area.
Protection of natural resources and the environment remains one of the primary goals for Azerbaijan. During the period of his leadership, Heydar Aliyev always paid special attention to the preservation of the country’s rich fauna and flora and the greening of Baku. Today, the tradition of protecting the nation's natural heritage laid by the country’s national leader is successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev. It is no coincidence that one of the priorities of the national development strategy implemented in the country is to ensure protection of environment and the well-being of its people. With this vision, in 2010 President Ilham Aliyev declared the Year of Ecology in Azerbaijan.
After planting the trees, the President and First Lady took photos with participants of the event.
President Ilham Aliyev attaches large significance to the condition of soils and areas affected by oil production waste and other pollutants. Necessary measures have been taken to improve water quality and water supply, millions of trees planted and new parks have been established. Efforts to remove and clean the oil from once an oil-impacted White City and other areas of Baku recovered the places and made them more attractive. As a consequence, these places have turned into new living and cultural complexes and modern environmental projects, as it was noted by the President Ilham Aliyev. The reason for the efforts to improve the environmental situation, as well as on the basis of a decisive position demonstrated by the President against the illegal tree cutting, has one goal - protection of people’s well-being and their health.
Led by First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, a non-for-profit institution focused on developing projects in the areas of preservation of cultural sites, intercultural dialogue, education, youth and sports - Heydar Aliyev Foundation also shows great importance to the protection of greeneries and increase of new green spaces in the country. Projects initiated and supported by Vice-president of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder and head of IDEA Leyla Aliyeva play an unprecedented role in environmental conservation and awareness raising.
It should be noted that environmental projects are being conducted across the different parts of the country. Active participation of citizens in nation-wide tree planting and cleanup activities in cities as well as rural areas indicates on the extent of work and strength of public enthusiasm. According to experts, Azerbaijan’s approaches with regards to environmental protection can serve as a role model for other countries.
