Closing ceremony of the 6th International "Maiden Tower" Art Festival held at Qala Reserve

On 14 June 2015, the closing ceremony of the 6th International “Maiden Tower” Art Festival as well as the opening of the museum “From Waste to Art” and an exhibition of the same title took place at the Qala State History and Ethnography Museum.

The ceremonies were attended by the Vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder and Director of IDEA Public Union Leyla Aliyeva.

At the outset, Leyla Aliyeva viewed the works exhibited in the framework of the “Maiden Tower” Art Festival.

The Festival is held by Icherisheher State History and Architecture Reserve, at the initiative and with support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and with the organizational support of IDEA Public Union, Modern Art Museum, Maiden Tower Art Gallery and Operation Committee of the first European Games “Baku 2015”.

The primary objective of the Festival is to introduce Azerbaijan’s culture and art through artists visiting from around the world, as well as to contribute to worldwide promotion of the Maiden Tower - the symbol of Baku. The Festival featured artists decorating mock-ups of the Maiden Tower in their national style and creating works reflecting synthesis of different cultures and traditions. The organizers of the Festival also highlight the issue of protecting the environment. Mock-ups of a gazelle chosen as the symbol of the endangered “Caucasian Five” were made and decorated in a special painting style by artists that had participated in last year’s festival and who are considered friends of the Festival. 27 artists from 17 countries of the world have participated in this year’s festival.

Artists participating in the Festival have also painted the statues of pomegranate and gazelle – symbols of the first European Games.

Mock-ups of the Maiden Tower and Gazelle, which have become exceptional works of art, would first be placed in Icherisheher for residents of Baku and guests of the capital and then exhibited in different countries to represent Azerbaijan, its history and culture.

Then, the opening ceremony of the 4th International “From Waste to Art” Exhibition took place.

Leyla Aliyeva viewed the works of the exhibition.

Works of art made of domestic waste by 23 artists from 17 countries are displayed at the exhibition. The exhibition took place at the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, with the organizational support of “Clean City” OJSC, and support of IDEA Public Union, Icherisheher State History and Architecture Reserve and “Q Gallery” art gallery. The aim of the exhibition is to ascribe value to waste and propagate responsible approach in its handling.

The exhibition “From Waste to Art” has been held by “Clean City” OJSC since 2010 within the “Clean Qala” pilot project, at the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Within the framework of the project, various awareness-raising events related to management of waste are held for residents of the Qala settlement.

On June 14, the “From Waste to Art” museum was inaugurated in the Qala settlement. Works displayed for several days each year in previous exhibitions will be presented in this museum.
