“Let’s protect leopards!” - Environmental Summer Camp 2017

IDEA Campaign, along with the Ecological Training and Experience Center of the Ministry of Education and the representative office of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) in Azerbaijan, held its annual “Let's protect leopards!” summer camp as part of the Caucasian leopard conservation program. The camp took place in the village of Garibler and involved over 70 children from Masalli, Astara and Lanakaran regions.

The camp aimed to spread environmental awareness among the school aged children, develop a sense of respect and caring for nature in them, inform the local youth about the rare leopard species inhabiting the area and promote the protection of the species.

The campers attended a series of environmental seminars and engaged in various ecological research activities and games that revolved around the theme of preserving the endangered Caucasian leopard. The young people were widely informed about the specie’s lifestyle, habitat and their role in nature. The program also included the screening of “The World's Most Wanted Leopard” movie filmed in Azerbaijan by wildlife photographer and filmmaker Adrian Steirn and a field trip to the protected areas of leopards – Hyrkan National Park, which is covered by tertiary relic plants.

Environmental camps of IDEA have been annually held since 2014 in over 10 regions of the country (Salyan, Neftchala, Goranboy, Samukh, Gakh, Shaki, Masalli, Jalilabad, Yardimli, Lankaran, Astara and Goygol) and attended by over 300 schoolchildren.
