World Environment Day 2017 – Beach Cleanup

On 10 June 2017, IDEA Campaign and “Tamiz Shahar” JSC held the 7th coastal cleanup event to celebrate the World Environment Day and contribute to UN’s worldwide program - The Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML).

Over 200 eager volunteers turned up to clean the Novkhani beach and help to raise awareness on pollution, as well as spread the message that, failure to clean up waste on beaches, apart from causing sanitation problems, results in significant damage to marine environment.

Having been provided special waste collecting machines and equipped with all the necessary sanitary tools, the participants cleaned up the polluted plot of the shoreline. Together we have been able to remove nearly 4 tons of garbage, most of it being plastic recyclables, which was afterwards sent to the Balakhani Solid Waste Sorting Plant for recycling.

In regards with the annual World Environment Day, the event caused a significant public interest and brought together participants of all different ages. Among the volunteers that joined the cleanup were students and teachers from such schools and academic institutions as Baku State University, Azerbaijan University of Cooperation, University of Architecture and Construction, State Pedagogical University, Baku-Slavic University, Baku-Oxford School, Oxbridge Academy, Baku-European Lyceum, as well as private companies, representatives of the diplomatic corps and the employees of Executive Power of Binagadi district.

As part of its marine environment protection efforts, IDEA attaches special attention to the water quality improvement both in the Caspian Sea and in internal waters. Traditionally, IDEA organizes series of similar beach and river cleanups every year, attracting more and more public support each time.

Regardless of the season, IDEA Campaign calls upon everyone to join its cleanup initiatives to protect marine biodiversity and make the contribution to the global fight against the environmental problems!
