“Let’s protect gazelle!” - Environmental Summer Camp 2017

Organized within the program "Reintroduction of gazelles to their historical habitat areas in Caucasus", the annual environmental summer camp "Let's protect gazelles!" has successfully culminated its 2017 program in the region of Salyan. Held on 21-23 June, the camp involved over 60 school-children from the villages of Yenikend, Shakarli, Kursangi, Kurgaraghajli and Tatarmahalla.

Designed to teach youth the value of nature and need for conservation of local wildlife. Gazelle camp focused on bringing awareness about gazelle species that were reintroduced in areas where humans reside. During the course of the camp, participants were broadly informed about gazelles’ lifestyle, their habitat and role in nature. Campers engaged in various ecological research activities, quiz games and competitions, watched the “Azerbaijan. Saving the Gazelle” documentary movie that was filmed by a Belorussian filmmaker Igor Byshnev, and had a trip to Shirvan National Park to witness the thriving gazelles there. At the end, participants were given certificates and memory gifts.

Launched by Heydar Aliyev Foundation in 2010, the "Reintroduction of gazelles to their historical habitat areas in Caucasus" program is being successfully implement by IDEA Campaign, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and WWF Azerbaijan. During the past years more than 150 gazelle were reintroduced in their historical habitat areas in Azerbaijan (Shirvan National Park) and the Republic of Georgia, and were monitored since then.

Supported by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the representative office of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), IDEA camps have been annually held since 2014 in over 10 regions of the country (Salyan, Neftchala, Goranboy, Samukh, Gakh, Shaki, Masalli, Jalilabad, Yardimli, Lankaran, Astara, Goygol, Gabala) and attended by over 300 schoolchildren.
