On December 4, with the participation of Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder and head of the IDEA Public Union, the final tree-planting campaign of the 2021 “National Greening Marathon” (“Green Marathon”) was held at Absheron National Park, along with a cycling event organized within the framework of the EU4Climate project of the United Nations Development Programme.

The event was attended by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev, the Minister of Defense Industry of the Republic of Azerbaijan and President of the Azerbaijan Cycling Federation, Madat Guliyev, as well as representatives of the United Nations, the European Union, and the International Organization for Migration, along with the ambassadors extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom, Belgium, Tajikistan, Bulgaria, Greece, and Israel in Azerbaijan, and other members of the diplomatic corps.

During the event, the 1,000,000th tree of the 2021 “Green Marathon” was planted, marking the conclusion of the tree-planting campaign.

It should be noted that, within the framework of the “Green Marathon” campaign, mass tree-planting events were held across the country during the spring and autumn seasons of the current year. During the events jointly organized by the IDEA Public Union and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, various trees, including local species such as tamarisk, pine, pistachio, cypress, acacia, maple, hornbeam, walnut, oak, chestnut, and olive, were planted according to the soil and climatic conditions of different areas.

The main goal of the campaign organized jointly by the IDEA Public Union and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources is to increase the green areas of the country, promote tree planting, and contribute to environmental protection and awareness-raising regarding the preservation of greenery.

The EU4Climate regional project, funded by the European Union, aims to support the integration and implementation of climate-resilient and low-emission targets into legislation in partner countries in line with the Paris Agreement. The cycling event held at Absheron National Park, along with other activities, was organized within the framework of this project to promote clean transport in the country and to celebrate European Mobility Week.

The environmental event held at Absheron National Park also supports global efforts to achieve the targets set for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as discussed at the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Glasgow in November of the current year.

The IDEA Public Union calls on everyone to fulfill their responsibilities, protect the environment, and contribute to increasing greenery at a time when a vigorous global struggle is underway for the protection of our planet.
