An Alliance called DANMA (National Alliance for a Sustainable Azerbaijan), bringing together organizations operating in the environmental field in Azerbaijan or supporting environmental policy through their activities, has been established. In connection with this, a press conference was held at the Baku Congress Center on February 23.

Since March 2020, on the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, the founder of IDEA Public Union, an inclusive dialogue has been launched among representatives of numerous organizations and groups working in the field of ecology in our country, aimed at uniting efforts for environmental protection.

As a result of the interactive discussions and meetings held to date, the need for ecologists to unite within a single Alliance has arisen. The main goal of the Alliance is to support the creation of a green and sustainable future for Azerbaijan, including mobilizing youth for environmental protection and achieving better cooperation among the private sector, government, and civil society in solving ecological problems in the country. Meetings held with the participation of Alliance member organizations have included discussions on the current ecological situation in Azerbaijan and ways to address its challenges, and research has been initiated. At the same time, Alliance members have begun developing plans for future activities.

It is well known that ecological problems on Earth are becoming increasingly complex, and combating them requires greater effort and resources. Effective environmental protection demands the unification of forces of young eco-activists who care about the planet’s future and the development of more systematic approaches to addressing these issues. Taking this into account, the newly established Alliance’s main tasks include raising awareness of the importance of sustainability and ecological threats, engaging youth in ecological activism, investigating deliberate or accidental environmental damage, and promoting environmentally safe consumption and production models.

Initially, representatives of WWF Azerbaijan, EkoSfera – Social Ecological Center, AZGREEN, Healthy Thinking Youth Organization, Human and Environment Public Union, Towards a Healthy Life Ecological Public Union, Social Rights Research Public Union, OIKOS, and the Eco Club of Baku State University joined the Alliance.

Although sustainable development is a very broad concept, at its core lies the ecological health of our planet. Therefore, the Alliance calls on all nature-loving youth to actively participate in addressing environmental threats and emphasizes that, in the context of ongoing ecological disasters, environmental problems represent one of the most serious challenges facing humanity.
