A presentation of the Hydro Heroes mobile application, a software solution for reporting water leakages in public places, was held at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

The mobile application prepared within the partnership of IDEA Public Union and the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and Azersu OJSC was introduced to the public on Earth Day, which is celebrated worldwide.

It should be noted that the initiative to create a mobile application aimed at engaging the public in actions against water loss was put forward by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder of IDEA Public Union, during the Youth Forum held on June 5, 2018 – World Environment Day. Later, IDEA and the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project decided to jointly develop such a mobile application.

As is known, losses in water supply systems in most countries range between 20–70%. That is, due to accidents and malfunctions occurring in water distribution networks, a large portion of treated, potable water leaking into streets and public places is lost before reaching users. This means not only the loss of resources spent on water treatment and damage to public infrastructure, but also the further depletion of freshwater resources, which are already becoming scarce due to global warming and population growth.

The Hydro Heroes application, aimed at water conservation, enables citizens of Azerbaijan to use geolocation to send information and images about water leakages directly from their mobile phones to the relevant authority and to receive feedback regarding the resolution of the issue. The application will help significantly reduce the time required to eliminate leakages in the water network as well as water losses.

At the same time, the application includes entertaining and educational features related to water and water conservation, including a water-themed quiz and game, 360-degree videos of several waters in the Azerbaijani part of the Kura basin, an AR (Augmented Reality) function, a water consumption calculator, and more.

The application will operate on both Android and IOS platforms.

The Hydro Heroes mobile application was developed with the support of the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and “AzInTelecom” LLC.

Project partners call on all our citizens who use smartphones to download the Hydro Heroes application and contribute their important support to the efforts aimed at eliminating water losses.
