The "Earth Hour 2018" environmental campaign was held in Azerbaijan.

On March 24, a mass event against climate change was held in Baku within the framework of the international campaign “Earth Hour 2018.” The event was jointly organized by the IDEA Public Union, the “Cavan” Youth Movement Public Union, and the Azerbaijan branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Azerbaijan), the official coordinator of the campaign in Azerbaijan.
Participants gathered at the Seaside National Park to observe the one-hour switch-off of facade lights on large buildings in the city center. The youth symbolically pressed the “red button” to start the joint action. They then took part in lighting the campaign’s symbolic “60+” sign with candles during a countdown and participated in a bicycle ride.
Nearly 400 young people joined the “Earth Hour” 2018 event, which featured entertaining flash mobs, dances by popular groups aligned with the “Earth Hour” concept, prize competitions, continuous music during the event, and other surprises, drawing great interest from the youth.
As the world’s largest environmental movement, “Earth Hour” mobilizes millions of people to combat climate change. Started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, as a simple mass lights-off action, the “Earth Hour” campaign was observed by 187 countries in 2017. The campaign has led to a number of concrete environmental outcomes, including increasing global awareness on social networks and transforming people into environmental activists. Last year, over 300 young people joined the large-scale event organized in Azerbaijan by the IDEA Public Union within the framework of the campaign, which celebrated its 10th anniversary.
As the official coordinator of the international “Earth Hour 2018” campaign in Azerbaijan, the IDEA Public Union expresses gratitude to the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Heydar Aliyev Center, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Baku City Executive Power, Government House, “Hilton Baku,” “JW Marriott Absheron,” “Bulvar,” and “Intourist” hotels, “Park Bulvar” shopping center, “Icherisheher” State Historical and Architectural Reserve Administration, State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic, Seaside Boulevard Administration, Baku Olympic Stadium, “Baku Crystal Hall,” National Gymnastics Arena, all regional “ASAN service” centers, ADA University, and the “Flame Towers” complex for joining this year’s “Earth Hour” campaign in our country.
Considering the seriousness of the climate change threat and the necessity of fighting it for humanity, the IDEA Public Union calls on everyone to contribute to solving this problem and to avoid wastefulness by saving energy.
