On February 3, a march dedicated to wetland areas was held on the Coastal Boulevard by IDEA, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and WWF Azerbaijan.

The march was dedicated to Gizilagach National Park, which is included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance, essential for the survival of fish and bird species facing the risk of extinction, and declared a “Hope Spot” by Mission Blue in 2019 based on IDEA’s presentation.

The organizers express their gratitude to everyone who came to this symbolic event and supported the protection of our wetlands.

Unfortunately, wetlands are often regarded as unnecessary areas, yet they are among the most productive ecosystems, cleaning our waters, providing habitats for all animals, protecting our coasts, and helping nature adapt to climate change.

Wetlands, which hold five times more freshwater than the world’s rivers and absorb at least seven times more carbon dioxide than forests, are actually destroyed three times faster than forests. Additionally, wetlands are the natural habitats for over 2,000 plant species, more than 200 bird species, over 40 reptiles, and more than 1,000 invertebrate species.

Therefore, we must prevent the destruction of wetland areas, protect and restore them, and raise awareness of this issue at both national and global levels.
