On November 27, students from 10 schools across the country participated in the “World’s Largest Lesson” at Secondary School No. 23 in the capital to discuss the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the event, students met with Deputy Minister of Education Mahbabat Valiyeva, Head of the Secretariat of the National Coordination Council on Sustainable Development Goals Huseyn Huseynov, Executive Director of the “International Dialogue for Environmental Protection” (IDEA) Public Union Surkhay Shukurov, and the Head of UNICEF Azerbaijan Edward Carvardin.

The initiative to involve children in global efforts aimed at building a more sustainable future for every child was launched by the IDEA Public Union, the Ministry of Education, and UNICEF.

The “World’s Largest Lesson” is a global initiative launched in September 2015 to introduce SDGs to children and to encourage young people to actively discuss these issues and adopt a critical approach in their communities.

The IDEA Public Union and UNICEF ensured the adaptation of special materials prepared for such global lessons to the Azerbaijani context. This aims to present SDGs to children, with particular attention to environmental and climate change issues. To conduct such lessons in each class, teachers from a total of 20 schools in Baku and Khachmaz were engaged in a series of training sessions starting in September. Materials available in Azerbaijani and relevant information about the 20 schools have been published on the website dedicated to this global initiative.

The “World’s Largest Lesson” is supported by public figures and officials from around the world, such as Queen Rania of Jordan, American tennis star Serena Williams, and Brazilian footballer Neymar. Additionally, every year, government leaders from various countries join these lessons as teachers or participants.
