The rapid development and industrialization in the South Caucasus region in recent years have brought many environmental issues to the forefront. As a country located in a region rich in natural oil and gas resources, Azerbaijan has also tried to focus and direct society’s efforts toward preventing the dangers caused by environmental problems. To this end, 2010 was declared the “Year of Ecology” in Azerbaijan. Despite being a young country, Azerbaijan emphasizes industries and businesses that include environmental protection, ensures the education of the younger generation, and encourages them to take a leading role in preserving the environment. The new generation, understanding the urgency of solving today’s environmental problems, must live with a common purpose for environmental protection.

Taking the above issues into account, the IDEA (International Dialogue for Environmental Protection) campaign will hold an international camp for young ecologists titled “The Role of Youth in Environmental Governance: Today and Tomorrow.” The camp will take place from November 24 to 27, 2011, in Gabala, one of the most beautiful regions of Azerbaijan.

The IDEA campaign (International Dialogue for Environmental Protection) was launched on July 12, 2011, at the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Head of the Russian Azerbaijani Youth Organization. The main objective of the campaign is to bring young people together, inform and motivate them to live in harmony with the environment.

The main purpose of organizing the camp is to contribute to establishing professional connections among various environmental groups and movements developing in the region and around the world through regional cooperation and networking. In addition, the camp aims to ensure active participation of young ecologists in the social life of the regions they represent, strengthen the role of young ecologists in their communities, and encourage them to act as ambassadors in implementing environmental awareness initiatives.

The three-day youth camp will begin with an opening ceremony and continue with seminars and training courses on three different topics.

The working languages of the camp are English and Russian. Representatives from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan, will attend the opening ceremony. More than 100 young ecologists from various countries around the world are expected to participate in the event.

The main panel topics of the camp are as follows:

  • The role of youth in addressing new and emerging global environmental problems
  • Prospects for environmental cooperation – networking and public support projects
  • Development of the green economy
