On Wednesday, the ceremonial opening of the Azerbaijan–Russia Friendship Bridge took place in Astrakhan.

The opening ceremony was attended by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and initiator of the IDEA (International Dialogue for Environmental Action) campaign.

The ceremony was also attended by officials from the Azerbaijani government and the Astrakhan regional administration, deputies of the National Assembly, the Azerbaijani community in Astrakhan, and city residents.

According to her, one of the main directions of the Foundation's activities is environmental protection. For this reason, last year the Heydar Aliyev Foundation launched a new international movement under the name IDEA.

Leyla Aliyeva delivered a speech at the bridge opening ceremony. She expressed her gratitude to the organizers of the event for the warm reception in Astrakhan.

“I am very pleased to be here for the first time today and to have the opportunity to learn about the projects implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in the Russian Federation. I would like to thank the leadership of Astrakhan for your kind words and for your contribution to the development of relations between Azerbaijan and Russia,” Leyla Aliyeva said.

Speaking about Azerbaijan’s rapid economic development in recent years, Leyla Aliyeva provided the participants with detailed information about the multifaceted activities of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

According to her, one of the main directions of the Foundation's activities is environmental protection. For this reason, last year the Heydar Aliyev Foundation launched a new international movement under the name IDEA.

“The main goal of IDEA is to protect our planet and to raise awareness among young people about environmental issues. In almost one year of its existence, IDEA has implemented many interesting and successful projects, including tree planting, building nests for birds, and organizing conferences, photo exhibitions, and seminars. Personally, the protection of endangered animals is very important to me. For this reason, IDEA has identified the ‘big five’ of such animals in Azerbaijan: the eagle, bear, wolf, Caucasian leopard, and gazelle. As far as I know, the little cuckoo is also on the verge of extinction in Astrakhan. To address this, IDEA plans to organize a competition in Astrakhan schools from October of this year on the protection of this bird. The winner of this competition will have the opportunity to visit Azerbaijan and get acquainted with our country,” Leyla Aliyeva said.
