IDEA Public Union at the IUCN World Conservation Congress

IDEA Public Union participated in the World Conservation Congress organized by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Honolulu, USA (Hawaii) from September 1 to 11.
As a member of IUCN, IDEA actively took part in the sessions held within the framework of the Congress, including the election of the organization’s new President and Regional Representatives, and in setting targets for the next four years. By contributing to the discussions on the approval of slogans related to nature conservation, IDEA drew the world’s attention to the threats facing the biodiversity of our country and region.
IDEA Public Union’s distinctive pavilion, installed at the Congress venue, attracted great interest from the event participants.
The walls of the pavilion were decorated with paintings by Leyla Aliyeva, founder and head of IDEA Public Union and initiator of “Baku Corner,” depicting Azerbaijan’s rare fauna species. The illustrations of leopards and gazelles portrayed by the artist reflected the importance of these captivating animals for our nature and the threats they face. Thousands of visitors to the pavilion not only admired its grandeur but also received extensive information about Azerbaijan’s natural treasures. Winners of small competitions held among the visitors were presented with various valuable souvenirs from “Baku Corner.”
The pavilion showcased IDEA Public Union’s biodiversity conservation projects and achievements over the past five years. Documentary films about Azerbaijan’s enchanting nature, including those produced as part of IDEA’s initiative “9 Wonders of Azerbaijan,” featuring Goygol, Aggol, and Shirvan National Parks, were screened, providing detailed information about the country’s ecosystem. Visitors were offered various educational and promotional materials of IDEA. The activities of IDEA were highly appreciated by both Congress participants and the local public.
IUCN Executive Director Inger Andersen praised IDEA’s active participation in the Congress and its magnificent pavilion. She also expressed gratitude to Leyla Aliyeva for her support of IUCN’s nature conservation projects and environmental protection efforts.
The 2016 World Conservation Congress, held under the slogan “Planets at the Crossroad,” was attended by over 10,000 delegates from 192 countries. The Congress’s greatest achievement was the adoption of the post-2015 agenda and roadmap for nature conservation, known as the “Hawaii Commitments.” The main commitments outlined in the document covered issues such as the closure of industrial activities in specially protected areas, the conservation of the open ocean, and forest protection.
IDEA Public Union has been a full member of IUCN since 2014. Founded in 1948, IUCN is recognized today as the largest and oldest organization in the world operating in the field of environmental conservation. Currently, the organization has a total of 1,200 members, including more than 200 government and over 900 non-governmental organizations. IUCN’s global “Red List” is considered the most comprehensive document reflecting the world’s fauna species at risk of extinction.
