Within the framework of the IDEA campaign, a tree-planting event was held under the slogan “A Young Tree for a Young Spirit.”

The first tree-planting action within the IDEA (International Dialogue for Environmental Action) campaign, founded by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, was carried out.

On December 8, 2011, numerous representatives of youth organizations planted over 20,000 trees and ornamental shrubs on the territory of the No. 2 Landscaping Department at the 17th kilometer of the Zigh highway in Baku.
The youth participated in the first event of the tree-planting campaign with great enthusiasm. They were inspired by the fact that this initiative was proposed by Leyla Aliyeva, a leader of Azerbaijan’s youth.

On November 25–26 of this year, speaking at the international camp of young ecologists in Gabala on the theme “The Role of Youth in Environmental Management: Today and Tomorrow,” Leyla Aliyeva stated that the campaign was launched under the motto “A Young Tree for a Young Spirit.” Within the campaign, it is planned to plant 300,000 trees by June 2012, prior to the UN “Rio+20” Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro.

Leyla Aliyeva, founder of IDEA, emphasized that trees and plants are the sole source of oxygen on our planet. On a sunny day, the leaves of a single tree produce 25% of the oxygen needed by one person in a day. One acre of trees releases enough oxygen in a day to meet the needs of 18 people.

Environmental protection and human health are among the priority directions of Azerbaijan’s state ecological policy.
In 2010, declared the “Year of Ecology” by the Decree of President Ilham Aliyev, 14 million trees were planted in Baku and the regions, and many parks were established. During the greening months, much work was also carried out through the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. This process continues under the motto “Every Youth – a Tree,” initiated by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Foundation.

The tree-planting campaign within the IDEA initiative will continue, further enriching Azerbaijan’s green nature.
