On November 23, in Imishli district, orchards were established for low-income families through a joint initiative of the IDEA Public Union, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During the tree planting campaign, 1,000 pomegranate seedlings were planted on a 2-hectare area allocated in Imishli district. The established orchards were distributed among low-income families living in the district and provided to them for free use. These families will care for the orchards, harvest the produce, and gain income, thereby improving their financial well-being.

The pilot project for planting fruit trees was initiated in April 2017 at the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder and head of the IDEA Public Union, and Goodwill Ambassador of the FAO. Within the project, the first orchard was established in Ismayilli, followed by orchards in Shamkir, Aghstafa, Tovuz, Aghdash, Gakh, Lankaran, Beylagan, Sabirabad, Aghjabadi, Barda, Lerik, Guba, and Gabala districts, and provided for use by low-income families, including veterans of the Karabakh war and families of martyrs.

The socio-economic significance of the project lies in the fact that establishing such orchards not only improves the welfare of the population but also contributes to reducing the country’s dependence on imports of agricultural products.

Within the framework of the project, nearly 17,248 fruit trees, including varieties of hazelnut, pomegranate, apricot, feijoa, persimmon, walnut, and apple, have been planted, and 50 low-income families have been provided with orchards.

As part of the project to establish orchards for low-income families, tree planting campaigns were held in November in the Gazakh and Goygol districts, and in the future, they will also be organized in other districts of the country.

It should be noted that more than 200 local young volunteers joined the campaign to establish orchards in Imishli district. IDEA expresses its gratitude to all volunteers who participated in the campaign and to the organizations that supported the event, showing care for the environment.
