The IDEA campaign led by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, has drawn the attention of leading media outlets worldwide.
The article notes that one of the most pressing issues the world faces today is climate change and its impact on the environment.
The Earth is heating up over time, and scientists unanimously confirm that the primary cause is human activity. Undoubtedly, climate change could be one of the greatest threats our planet may face. Recent statistics show that temperatures continue to rise in various regions, and extreme weather conditions are becoming more frequent.

Nine out of the eleven climate types in the world are found in the South Caucasus, particularly in Azerbaijan. The country and the region face major climate challenges, ranging from the extinction of certain animal species and industrially induced climate pollution to water supply and safety concerns.

The climate program implemented by the Azerbaijani government is already showing results. Areas are being cleaned from industrial waste, national park projects are being carried out, and investments are being made in renewable energy sources.

A new and timely idea has been proposed in Azerbaijan regarding this issue. In July of this year, Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and spokesperson for the Foundation’s environmental program, launched a new international campaign called IDEA (International Dialogue for Environmental Action).

The campaign’s concept is “Harnessing the Potential of Youth in Creating Global Environmental Harmony.” The purpose of the IDEA campaign is to increase knowledge about environmental issues and to draw the attention of youth and the international community to the importance of environmental protection.

IDEA is based on principles such as dialogue, action, leadership, and education, which are essential factors that will help youth make a positive and lasting impact on climate change. Leyla Aliyeva also officially launched the first photo competition dedicated to Azerbaijan’s nature and environment within the campaign framework.

Azerbaijan continues to implement a series of projects related to the development of alternative and renewable energy sources, aiming to improve ecological conditions in the country and the South Caucasus.

The IDEA campaign has declared November of this year as “Ecology Month” under the slogan “Let’s Protect Our Environment.” In cooperation with the UNDP Baku office and the OSCE, IDEA plans to organize the First Regional Camp of Young Ecologists in Gabala, Azerbaijan, from November 24–27.

In an article published in the Huffington Post, Leyla Aliyeva, the author of this important environmental initiative, emphasized:

“I have witnessed the damage uncontrolled industrial development can cause in my country. We are learning from the past – we inherited pollution from the Soviet era. Azerbaijan is a country rich in natural resources, including oil and gas. As a strategic partner, we also play an important role as an energy source for all of Europe. This does not mean we are no longer thinking about the future or seeking sustainable development. We are investing in renewable energy sources to achieve this goal.”

This is not the first major initiative introduced by Leyla Aliyeva. As the coordinator for intercultural dialogue at the Youth Forum on Dialogue and Cooperation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Leyla Aliyeva is also engaged in implementing programs aimed at fostering friendship among youth from Muslim and Western countries.
