In order to build a cleaner and healthier future, the IDEA Public Union, the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Azerbaijan, and the BRAVO supermarket chain jointly organized a campaign to reduce the use of polyethylene bags.

During the campaign, hundreds of eco-bags were distributed to customers visiting the BRAVO hypermarket near the "Koroglu" metro station. The event supports the "Plastic-Free July" movement, which aims to help millions of people worldwide participate in the fight against plastic pollution.

At the event, which attracted significant interest from shoppers, IDEA volunteers not only distributed eco-bags to citizens but also explained the harms of plastic to nature and the human body, simple steps to reduce the use of single-use plastic items, and the importance of sorting waste and sending it for recycling. Finally, a survey was conducted among the capital's residents regarding their attitude towards sorting, recycling, and reusing waste to effectively organize the fight against plastic pollution.

It should be noted that, considering the importance of raising public awareness in waste management for the efficient and economical use of natural resources, a number of large-scale projects have been implemented on the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, founder and head of the IDEA Public Union and Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, resulting in the collection and recycling of over 3,000 tons of paper and more than 1,000 tons of plastic waste.

The UK government has also carried out significant work to reduce plastic use. In 2015, after large supermarkets in England began charging customers for plastic bags, sales of such bags decreased by more than 95%.

It is known that, to reduce the environmental harm of plastic waste, the sale, import, and production of plastic bags up to 15 microns thick have been fully banned in our country since January 1, 2021. From July 1, the import, production, and sale of single-use plastic stirrers, forks, spoons, knives, plates, and cups have also been prohibited.

The IDEA Public Union, the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Azerbaijan, and the BRAVO supermarket chain call on everyone to refuse single-use plastic items, including polyethylene bags, favor environmentally friendly alternatives, and choose a sustainable lifestyle for the welfare of current and future generations. Let us unite our strength and efforts to overcome the plastic threat! Let us win against plastic together!
