On November 8, in Gabala district, orchards were planted for low-income families through a joint initiative of IDEA Public Union, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During the tree-planting campaign, 1,248 hazelnut trees were planted on a 2-hectare area allocated in Gabala district. The planted orchards were distributed among low-income families living in the mentioned districts and provided to them for free use. These families will care for the orchards, harvest the produce, generate income, and improve their financial well-being.

The pilot project for planting fruit trees was initiated in April 2017 at the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder and head of IDEA Public Union, and FAO Goodwill Ambassador. Within the project, the first orchard was established in Ismayilli, followed by orchards in Shamkir, Aghstafa, Tovuz, Agdash, Gakh, Lankaran, Beylagan, Sabirabad, Agjabadi, Barda, Lerik, and Guba districts, provided to low-income families, including veterans of the Karabakh war and families of martyrs.

The socio-economic significance of the project lies in the fact that establishing such orchards not only improves the welfare of the population but also contributes to reducing the country’s dependence on imports of agricultural products.

Within the framework of the project, nearly 16,248 fruit trees, including hazelnut, pomegranate, apricot, feijoa, persimmon, walnut, and apple varieties, have been planted, and 47 low-income families have been provided with orchards.

Within the project for establishing orchards for low-income families, tree-planting campaigns were held in October–November in Imishli, Gazakh, and Goygol districts, and in the future, they will also be organized in other districts of the country.

It should be noted that more than 200 local young volunteers joined the campaign for establishing orchards in Guba district. IDEA expresses its gratitude to all volunteers who participated in the campaign and to the organizations that supported the event, demonstrating attention to the environment.
