On May 24, within the framework of the “Urban Ecology” project of the IDEA Public Union, squirrels were released into the green area on the campus of ADA University. The “Urban Ecology” project is aimed at the protection and reintroduction of fauna species typical of urban environments and once widespread in the area.

Initially, 25 squirrels were released into the campus area, which provides favorable living conditions for them.

Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder and head of the IDEA Public Union, attended the event.

Another purpose of releasing the squirrels in this area is for them to naturally reproduce by moving to the new Zoological Park, which is predominantly populated with pine trees, and to Dede Gorgud Park.

As is known, alongside multifaceted efforts to preserve wildlife, extensive measures are being carried out under Leyla Aliyeva’s initiative to protect species specific to urban environments. In this context, the IDEA Animal Care Center has been established in Baku to protect street animals, special shelters are being set up for cats throughout the city, IDEA bird nests are being installed, and other related activities are conducted. The “Urban Ecology” project envisages the enrichment of public spaces in Baku and its surroundings with animal and bird species that can live and reproduce in urban environments, as well as the consistent implementation of measures to preserve these species. The main goal of all these efforts is to create harmony between city residents and the environment and to strengthen closer and healthier interactions.

In the past, numerous squirrels and parakeets inhabited the territory of Baku city, freely moving among people in parks and other green areas. However, by the end of the last century, due to existing ecological problems, the number of these species sharply declined. In recent years, extensive greening and landscaping work in the country, especially the efforts of the IDEA Public Union, have created favorable conditions for the return of many fauna species in Baku through the reduction of illegal tree cutting and the planting of countless new trees. The squirrels released on the campus as part of the project will also naturally reproduce by moving to Dede Gorgud Park and the area of the new Zoological Park, where pine trees predominate.

The IDEA Public Union calls on everyone to support the process of restoring the number of fauna species that can live in urban environments, to be caring towards animals, and to approach them with sensitivity during their adaptation to new living conditions.
