Under the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder and head of the IDEA Public Union, the next tree-planting event across the country within the framework of the “Nationwide Greening Marathon” (“Green Marathon”) was held on April 5 in the Khodjasan settlement.

Journalists from Azerbaijan Television also enthusiastically joined the large-scale tree-planting campaign, organized jointly by the IDEA Public Union and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. During the event, more than 1,000 Eldar pine and olive trees, suited to the soil and climate conditions of the Absheron Peninsula, were planted on an area of 2 hectares.

The campaign, carried out jointly by the IDEA Public Union and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, aims to conduct mass tree-planting actions in various regions of the country during the spring and autumn planting seasons, as well as to increase green spaces.

It should be noted that, as part of this year’s “Green Marathon,” the creation of green corridors in Azerbaijan, especially on the Absheron Peninsula, is planned, along with the planting of trees in areas with complex relief and steep slopes. In this regard, terraces will be prepared on the slopes, the tree coverage will be shaped into a natural water-retaining form, and rainwater will be directed to irrigate the trees. This will prevent soil erosion, improve soil aeration, water permeability, and fertility, resulting in a higher survival rate of the plants, and save irrigation water in these areas. Additionally, the campaign provides for planting forest species, sowing seeds, and carrying out forest restoration activities on 1,000 hectares of open forest fund lands during the spring and autumn planting seasons.

The main goal of the project is to prevent potential threats arising from the reduction of green areas, contribute to environmental protection by promoting tree planting, enhance the country’s flora biodiversity, and raise public awareness about the preservation of greenery.

Mass tree-planting activities also support global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change.

The IDEA Public Union, intending to continue efforts to protect and expand green areas in the country, calls on the public, together with its partners, to actively participate in environmental protection and initiatives aimed at safeguarding our Planet.
