“Green Marathon 2022” tree planting campaign has been launched

Under the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder and head of the IDEA Public Union, the next nationwide mass tree-planting campaign has been launched within the framework of the “National Greening Marathon” (“Green Marathon”).
Thus, on April 2, the first tree-planting event of the year in Baku was held in the Mushfiqabad settlement as part of the “Green Marathon 2022.” During the event, which involved over 100 volunteers mobilized with the support of the Azerbaijan Volunteering Organizations Union, 2,000 trees of various species were planted, chosen according to the soil and climate conditions of the area.
Organized jointly by the IDEA Public Union and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the campaign aims to hold mass tree-planting events across different regions of the country during the spring and autumn planting seasons and to increase green spaces.
It should be noted that this year’s “Green Marathon” plans to create green corridors in Azerbaijan, particularly in the Absheron Peninsula, and to plant trees on complex terrains and steep slopes. In this regard, terraces will be prepared on the slopes, the tree coverage will be shaped into a natural water-retaining form, and rainwater will be directed to irrigate the trees. This will prevent soil erosion, improve soil aeration, water permeability, and fertility, resulting in a higher survival rate for the trees, while also conserving irrigation water in these areas.
The main goal of the project is to prevent potential threats arising from the reduction of green spaces, promote tree planting, contribute to environmental protection, enhance the country’s flora biodiversity, and raise awareness about the preservation of greenery.
Mass tree-planting efforts also support global initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
The IDEA Public Union, intending to continue efforts to protect and expand green spaces in the country, calls on the public, together with its partners, to actively participate in the fight for the protection of our Planet and in environmental initiatives.
