The event was held with the support of the IDEA Public Union, which once again obtained the status of the official coordinator of the international “Earth Hour” campaign in Azerbaijan, granted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Participants of the action gathered in the park of the Heydar Aliyev Center, considered a pearl of world architecture, and observed the one-hour switch-off of facade lights on large buildings located in the central part of the city. Young people pressed the symbolic “red button” to jointly launch the action. They then took part in the symbolic countdown, lighting the “60+” sign — the symbol of the campaign — with candles, as well as in a bicycle ride.

During the “Earth Hour 2019” action, which brought together nearly four hundred young people, entertaining flash mobs, performances by famous dance groups adapted to the “Earth Hour” concept, competitions, continuous music throughout the event, and other surprises sparked great interest among the youth.

As the world’s largest movement dedicated to the environment, “Earth Hour” mobilizes millions of people in the fight to stop climate change. Launched in 2007 in Sydney, Australia as a simple mass lights-off action, the “Earth Hour” campaign was marked by 188 countries in 2018. The campaign has led to concrete environmental results, including increased global awareness on social networks and the transformation of people into environmental activists.

It should be noted that since 2014, the IDEA Public Union, as the official coordinator of the “Earth Hour” campaign in Azerbaijan, has organized large-scale events across the country every year and, over six years, has managed to attract nearly 2,000 young people to the action.

IDEA Public Union expresses its gratitude to the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Heydar Aliyev Center, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Baku City Executive Authority, the “Icherisheher” State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration, the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Seaside Boulevard Administration, the Heydar Aliyev Park Complex in Ganja, the State Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Baku Olympic Stadium, “Baku Crystal Hall”, the National Gymnastics Arena, all “ASAN service” centers across the regions, ADA University, the “Flame Towers” complex, the Government House, the “Hilton Baku”, “JW Marriott Absheron”, “Bulvar”, “Intourist”, and “Bilgah Beach” hotels, as well as the “Park Bulvar” and “Ganjlik” shopping malls for joining this year’s “Earth Hour” campaign in our country.

Taking into account the seriousness of the climate change threat and the importance of combating it for humanity, the IDEA Public Union calls on everyone to contribute to solving this problem and to avoid waste by saving energy.
