On March 2, within the framework of the “Rich Basins” project of the IDEA Public Union and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, a ceremony was held to release 45,000 fry of the Caspian trout species included in Azerbaijan’s Red Book into the Caspian Sea.

The regular release of trout fry grown in net cages installed in the coastal marine area by the Azerbaijani Experimental Marine Fish Breeding Plant of the Ministry aims to increase the natural population of this valuable, endangered species.

As is known, over the past decades the populations of rare fish species of the Caspian Sea have reached the brink of extinction due to the negative impacts of human activity, including pollution, poaching and overfishing.

In this regard, on the initiative of the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder and head of the IDEA Public Union, Leyla Aliyeva, a number of important initiatives are being carried out to protect and restore the aquatic fauna of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region.

The “Rich Basins” project provides for measures aimed at increasing the natural populations of fish species, releasing various species of fry bred at fish farms into the natural environment, as well as reducing pollution in inland water basins and promoting fishing in accordance with legal and civil regulations.

It should be noted that the “Rich Basins” project was launched in May 2020. In 2021 alone, nearly 6 million fry of various fish species were released into water basins.
