A species of animal belonging to the family of the even-toed ungulates of the class of mammals. It is found in the southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus, in the forests of the Lesser Caucasus and Talysh in Azerbaijan.
Its body is relatively short, the back is higher than the front. The body length of males is 108-126 cm, and the shoulder height is up to 66-81 cm. Its mass varies between 22-32 kg. Although females are relatively small, sexual dimorphism is weakly expressed. Its horns are lyre-shaped with 3 protrusions. Females do not have horns. The color of adult individuals is uniform. In winter, most of the body cover is gray or gray-brown. In summer, they are more reddish-brown. There is no color difference between males and females.
It mainly inhabits forests and forest-meadow areas. It lives in small groups. It usually gives birth to 2 cubs in the spring. The cubs are able to participate in mating in the autumn of the year they are born.
