A species of animal belonging to the Canis lupus family of the Predatory order of the Mammalian class. It is found in most regions of Azerbaijan, especially in Gazakh, Zagatala, Shamakhi, Bilasuvar, Lankaran, Sheki and Agdam. It is frequently observed on the shores of the Gulf of Gizilaghaj of the Caspian Sea and in the Kura-Araz lowland, in the Hirkan National Park. It can even inhabit high mountainous areas.
The body length is 100-140 cm, the tail is 30-50 cm, the height is 80-100 cm, and the weight is 30-80 kg. The head and face are elongated, the teeth are sharp. The ears are erect and pointed. It has a very keen sense of smell. Its fur is gray, thicker in winter than in summer. They are active at night. The male wolf is larger than the female. They are monogamous animals. In April-May, the female wolf gives birth to 4-8 cubs.
In winter, they feed mainly on ungulates, and in summer, on small vertebrates, insects, and berries.
