A species of bird belonging to the Egret family of the Stork-kind order of the Bird class. It is widespread in Azerbaijan, found in freshwater, swamps, rivers, lakes and reservoirs, as well as coastal areas. It is a sedentary bird. It lives in colonies.

It is a long-legged, long-necked bird, gray above, white below, with black markings, and a fairly long, sharp beak. It is quite large: an adult male can weigh up to 2 kg. Females are slightly smaller.

Its main prey consists of small fish and various aquatic vertebrates, insects, mollusks, crustaceans, and others.
