A species of animal belonging to the Pig family of the Artiodactyl order of the Mammals class.
The body length is 130-175 cm, and the mass is 60-150 kg. The color is from light gray to black, the legs are short, relatively thin. The head is large, making up 1/3 of the body. The size and shape of the head are adapted to digging the ground. The ears are long and wide, the eyes are small. The body is thickly furred, which is denser in winter. Piglets are striped.
They live in herds. They eat green parts of plants, roots, tubers, fruit berries, nuts, insects, small animals - mollusks, fish, rodents and birds.
Mating begins in November-January. Males drive the young pigs out of the herd and pursue the females. The gestation period lasts 124-140 days. On average, 4-6, rarely 12 cubs are born. The main natural enemy is the wolf.
