A species of bird belonging to the family of Ducks of the order of Anseriformes of the class of Birds. It is a migratory species in Azerbaijan. It is widespread in the lakes of the lower reaches of the Kura River and on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Autumn migration occurs in November-December, and spring migration in March.

Depending on the season and gender, its weight varies between 400-1400 g. Its head is large, its neck is short and thin. It can head vertically well in the water. The male can be distinguished from other ducks by the black color of its breast, white mirrors on its wings, and a clearly visible white spot on its black head. It feeds on mollusks and insect larvae.
