A species of bird belonging to the family of Ducks of the order Anseriformes of the class of birds. It is a migratory waterfowl that lives mainly in wetlands, lakes, rivers and coastal areas in autumn and winter. It winters in Azerbaijan.
It is a medium-sized duck with a relatively short neck, short beak, and long, pointed tail. Its length is 45–51 cm, its wingspan is 75–86 cm, the weight of males is 600–1100 g, and the weight of females is 500–1000 g.
It feeds on aquatic plants. It builds its nest in dry places near water. It forms flocks during the breeding season.
