A species of animal belonging to the family of even-toed ungulates of the order of the mammal class. It is an endemic species in the Caucasus. It is found only in the Greater Caucasus Mountains in Azerbaijan. It is widespread from the upper belt of the forest to the tops of the mountains. It is well adapted to high mountain conditions. Its senses of hearing, vision and smell are well developed.
They live mainly in herds. Some males live alone. They make vertical migrations depending on the seasons and hours of the day. In spring, males leave the herd and live in higher belts, and in mid-autumn, the herds mix again and the mating season begins. The gestation period of females is 150-160 days. Before giving birth, females leave the herd and go to safe places. They give birth to 1, in some cases 2 cubs.
They are protected in the Zagatala State Nature Reserve, Ilisu and Shahdag national parks.
