Presentation of the Hydro Heroes Mobile Application

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan hosted the presentation of the Hydro Heroes mobile application designed to alert about water leaks in public places.

The presentation of the application, developed by IDEA and the Kur II UNDP project as part of the cooperation between the Ministry of Ecology and Azersu OJSC, coincided with Earth Day celebrated worldwide.

It is worth noting that the initiative to create a mobile application to engage the public in combating water loss was put forward by the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder of IDEA, Leyla Aliyeva, during the Youth Forum held on June 5, 2018, on World Environment Day. Subsequently, IDEA and the Kur II UNDP project decided to develop such a mobile application.

As it is known, in most countries, losses in water supply systems range from 20 to 70%. This means that due to accidents and malfunctions in water distribution networks, a significant portion of purified drinking water seeps into streets and public places before reaching consumers. Along with the loss of funds for water purification and damage to public infrastructure, this implies further reduction of freshwater resources, which are becoming increasingly limited due to global warming and population growth.

The Hydro Heroes application allows citizens of Azerbaijan to send information and images of water leaks from their mobile phones directly to the relevant authorities using geolocation and receive a response regarding the resolution of the issue. This application will significantly reduce the time to repair leaks in the water supply network and water loss.

The application will be available for smartphones running on Android and iOS platforms.

The Hydro Heroes application is developed with the support of the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations under the President of Azerbaijan and AzInTelecom LLC.
