The Urban Ecology Project is being Implemented in Baku
19.05.2019In Baku, the Urban Ecology project of the IDEA Public Union, aimed at preserving and reintroducing fauna species inherent to the urban environment and once widespread in the past, is being implemented.
On May 9, within the project and with the participation of the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder and leader of IDEA, Leyla Aliyeva, 20 squirrels were released into the green zone of the Baku Velopark.
Alongside the multifaceted efforts to conserve wildlife, wide-ranging measures are being taken to protect species associated with the urban environment, initiated by Leyla Aliyeva. In Baku, the IDEA Animal Care Center operates, focusing on the protection of street animals, with special shelters for cats and more being installed throughout the city. The Urban Ecology project envisages enriching public spaces in Baku and its environs with animal and bird species that can thrive and reproduce in urban conditions, along with a series of concerted efforts to conserve these species.
The primary goal of these endeavors is to foster harmony and establish a closer and healthier relationship between city dwellers and the environment.
In the past, squirrels and parrots inhabited the urban environment of Baku, fearlessly interacting with people in parks and other green areas. However, due to ecological issues at the end of the last century, their numbers sharply declined. As a result of extensive landscaping and greening efforts in recent years, notably through the endeavors of IDEA, instances of illegal tree felling in Baku have decreased, countless new trees have been planted, and favorable conditions have been created for the return of many fauna species to the city.
