Making Difference by Recycling Batteries
Single-use batteries disposed of in a landfill can leach toxic constituents, such as lead, cadmium and lithium, into the environment, contaminating groundwaters and resulting in possible exposure to humans. In May 2019, IDEA and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) started a program on the collection and utilization of used batteries, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Education. In the framework of the pilot program, 30 battery recycling bins were placed in Baku’s schools. The collected batteries are regularly delivered to the utilization site of SOCAR. The program will be gradually expanded to cover more local schools and other institutions.
