About Zangezur National Park

Zangezur National Park is one of Azerbaijan’s important protected natural areas, located in the Lesser Caucasus mountain range within the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Established on 16 June 2003, the park plays a key role in preserving rare mountain ecosystems and regional biodiversity.

Covering an area of 42,797.4 hectares, Zangezur National Park features a diverse landscape of mountain forests, alpine meadows, and rocky terrain. The variation in altitude creates favorable conditions for a wide range of plant and animal species to thrive.

Flora of Zangezur National Park

The flora of Zangezur National Park is rich in rare and endemic plant species. Naked dorema, wild thorny plants, Araz oak, and various iris species are commonly found throughout the park. Notable species such as delicate iris, Grossheim’s iris, and Mishchenko emerald flower highlight the park’s botanical significance.

Fauna of Zangezur National Park

Zangezur National Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife. Bird species include the European roller, pink pelican, Dalmatian pelican, white-tailed sea eagle, golden eagle, falcon, and Egyptian vulture. Species such as bustard, houbara, and Caspian snowcock also inhabit the area.

Amphibians and reptiles recorded in the park include the Syrian garlic frog, green frog, small tree frog, and short-legged frog. Red Book species such as the leopard, striped hyena, manul cat, mouflon, and bezoar goat emphasize the park’s high conservation value.
